The ultimate sacrifice.
Heartbreaking Tearjerker of the Day: 41-year-old Stacie Crimm was faced with her very own Sophie’s Choice: Undergo chemotherapy to treat her cancer and risk losing her unborn daughter, or forgo the treatment and save her child’s life, but most likely lose her own.
Crimm became pregnant in March after years of trying. She was diagnosed with head and neck cancer a few months later. Somehow, she managed to hold on long enough to give birth to baby girl Dottie Mae by C-section on August 18th.
Following the procedure, Crimm’s health began to rapidly deteriorate. She was too weak to even hold her newborn, but a nurse at the hospital was able to arrange for Dottie Mae to be brought in from the ICU and laid on her mother’s chest.
“Nobody said anything, it got real quiet,” said Stacie’s brother Ray Phillips. “I told my sister, ‘You have done a beautiful thing.’ It was the perfect moment, that’s what I called it.”
Crimm passed away three days later.
Phillips and his wife Jennifer were granted custody of Dottie Mae, and she now resides with them in Oklahoma City.
